This week post for 3/2/09 - 3/6/09
I'm getting closer to finishing, Barbaro, A Nation's Love Story therefore I'm currently in chapter 14 where Barbaro's hoof is beginning to grow back at the heel and cornet band after getting 80% of it removed due to a severe and acute laminitis outbreak in that particular hoof. The book has been very sad since the chapter where Barbaro broke his leg during the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Racecourse. I finsihed writing my fiction piece which came out very well with the ending being a cliff hanger, but its only to get the interest of the readers since this same piece of writing will appear in one of my books therefore if you wanna know what happens to Golden Mustang, you'll have to read to find out. I really do hope that those who read my fiction piece enjoy it since my goal is to not have boredom lure them to sleep, but to keep them awake and even begging for more. I also worked on a few prompts with my favorite being the prompt for the writer's competetion, which I surprisely lost because it seemed to be more of a popularity contest rather then awarding the one who had the best writing. I do feel a little dejected about losing since I was gonna use the five dollars to buy something for my little brother who is a upcoming master in Guitar Hero and will be starting Rockband soon. See you next week!
Golden Mustang's Goodbye
Golden Mustang’s Goodbye?
Kris Farewell wiped the sweat from her forehead, breathing in the fresh and clear summer air although she wasn’t focused on the intense heat, but rather the tall, buckskin standing in front of her. She watched his tail swish over his hind left leg and hindquarter to rid himself of the irritation of the flies buzzing all around his healthy and fit body. Once he granted her mission, she slipped the crown of his halter over his ears before clipping the headpiece in place. The hot nylon burned at her hands as she held his leadrope, stroking his gleaming neck which blinded her in bright sunlight that was only adding more heat to the already humid day.
“Come on, Ravenheart, let’s get back into the barn before the flies eat us alive,” she whispered in a low voice as lively as she could although she was lethargic like her horse. “I mean it this time, no balking today,” beginning to space out which gave the 16-hand stallion the opportunity to steal a few mouthfuls of grass until she caught him in the act. “Don’t even try it since I won’t fall for it . . . this time.”
The huge buckskin stallion’s name was really Golden Mustang due to his color and the fact he was usually running wild around her property, but had earned the nickname Ravenheart from his deceased stepfather, Wild Heart. The nickname came from Golden Mustang’s past life which has been a large raven with coal black eyes as well as a kind heart that held a will to life through anything.
“Come on, is, one more mouthful, please!” Golden Mustang begged with a gentle tug of the black leadrope while looking at his sister-like herd member with his raven like eyes that has the potential to trap anything. “You always said that one mouthful wouldn’t hurt,” managing to steal his final bite of the soft grass before willingly following her since the flies were getting so unbearable that running into the barn seemed like a good option.
The 14-year-old smiled as she looked up at the stallion walking beside her whose footfalls were matching hers perfectly, and she began to recall all of the hardships they had endured so far while bracing herself for whatever obstacles awaited them in the future. Her eyes looked up at the two people standing outside of the pasture which clearly was her father although she didn’t recognize the other man. She asked her horse to halt telepathically as soon as she began to see who the other person was, swallowing hard because she already knew what was going on. Unconsciously, her trembling hand went up to stroke Golden Mustang’s jowl just as Johnny Farewell’s stern and bellowing voice reached them.
Golden Mustang took a few startled steps back, pulling Kris with him who gasped as the leadrope painfully began to slide through her hands although she refused to let go despite the burning. His eyes rolled back with a huge jerk of his head that dragged his human friend into his side as he half reared, frantically pulling again while striking out at Kris who leaped out of the way as quickly as she could. His own past experiences with yelling and whips was racing through his mind, feeling all of that horrible pain and fear like he had never been able to forget, just put aside to live in the present. He felt his large left hoof skid along Kris’s ankle which was being protected by her boots and chaps. Only his toe actually hit her directly, still desperate to keep from letting go despite the slight tingling in her bruised ankle. Shifting his weight onto his hind legs and hindquarters which were surging with power, he half reared again before springing forward into a full gallop while tearing the leadrope from his owner’s hands. His fearful eyes caught sight of her falling form that hit the ground near his panicking hooves that were slightly wet with the early morning dew that left the grass with a slight chill.
Kris immediately tucked into a ball with her hands flying to cover up her head, remembering how she had fell right by his frantic hooves therefore knew she had a very high chance of getting kicked. Her heart was slamming in her chest as she closed her eyes, waiting for the feeling of thundering hooves to slam down upon her unprotected body.
“Don’t let this be the end,” she thought as she prayed to her guardians to let his hooves just miss her, to somehow not strike her as they grew louder which left a slight ringing in her ears. “ I’m scared ,I’m very scared right now that he’s going to kill me, please don’t let my fate be from my own horse otherwise they’ll kill him!” her fear for her horse vanquishing her current fear of being kicked. “ Please, please, please!” waiting although she never felt the onslaught of hooves come, letting out a sight of relief as she opened her eyes. “Thank you, Great Guardians, thank you!”
The first thing her hazel eyes saw once they adjusted to the sunlight were Golden Mustang’s black and golden legs dancing majestically in the soft, green blanket of Mother Earth’s creation. She also caught sight of the leadrope dangling from his halter, dangerously close to his fragile fetlocks which sent another wave of complete horror through her. Slowly, she sat up as Ravenheart cast a apologizing glance her way before covering the five feet distance over to her, lowering his head which made his mane run along her arm. Her hands were grasping at the long strands of black hair, getting a strong grip on it as her horse pulled her up to her feet while steadying her with his neck.
“Are you alright? “Johnny asked as he slid to a stop alongside the pair of horse and owner whose face was a pale as a ghost, and wishing it wasn’t because it showed how frightened she had been. “ Did he turn on you?” reading the signs on her face that showed exactly how close to death she had been for those few moments.
“He just. . . spooked,”Kris stuttered with a badly shaken voice, gaining enough of her balance back to brush her bangs from her eyes with her dirt covered hands which was when she saw the small cuts and burn marks on her hands from trying to stop the buckskin. " And other then a few small cuts, I'm- I'm fine," flashing a quick smile though the blood she knew was now caked on her sweaty face, hearing Golden Mustang's second apology through their telepathic connection. " He-he didn't mean to, the yelling just - just scared him!"
" He's a stallion, right?" the other man questioned since he knew exactly how he was going to achieve his plan that noone else could know of right now, his thoughts racing about how his devilish plot was going to be successful. " Oh, Christina, my name is Sean Ransom," and he saw from the angry look of the teenager that they unfortunately had met before.
" Yeah, he's the only stallion that I let Kris handle at the current time, the old stallion that we use to have passed away although he was gelded, but had the fortune of being a rig therefore he could still impregnant mares. Why are you even asking?" concerned about the strange tune in Sean's voice as well as the fact that Kris looked ready to snap like a enraged lead mare, therefore knew he would be asking and answering all of the questions.
" Perhaps, a stallion is still to much for her as you were saying earlier," Sean continued greedily, but what caught Kris's attention were Katy and Natalie slipping into the field which was the exact escape she and Golden Mustang both needed. " What do you-," watching the teenager lead the buckskin stallion up to the fence that was beside them before slipping the leadrope around his neck like a lasso. " What are you doing?" and Golden Mustang lowered his head as his trusted human friend used it to swing onto his back in one quick and swift motion.
Kris squeezed her calfs against Ravenheart's sides, her inside leg at his girth while her outside slid about three inches behind the girth, and sent them off at a smooth, 3-beated canter toward the front end of the pasture. She felt the wind already pricking at her eyes which filled with ears from the speed of the gate, feeling each hoofbeat hit the ground while seeming to blend in beautifully with the Earth. To her, Golden Mustang was Earth, Water, Wind, and Fire, he contained all of the 4 apparently imaginary elements she dreamed of which turned out to be real after all. Her tense hands soon relaxed as she felt the air flying through her hair, already singing the lyrics to We Can Do Anything by the Saddle Club therefore she had the stallion's full attention. Her eyes which were looking between the black tipped ears of her horse, could see her two closest human friends watching them with interested eyes that were also confused.
" Is that really the best idea?" Natalie questioned as the horse and rider neared them who were obviously having fun riding toward them in the morning dew at a controlled and eager canter. " Is she even using a bridle?"
" Nope, just a lasso tied leadrope like the twine ones you make," Katy replied calmly since she trusted Kris with any horse therefore wasn't worried about anything horrible unless someone was going to try and hurt inseperable pair. " Hey, Kris, what's going on?"
" My dad might sell Golden Mustang!" Kris exclaimed as she dismounted the horse who was still trotting, leading him up to the other 14 and 15-year-old. " And he might sell him to Mr. Ransom!"
" Mr. Ransom? You can't just let your dad sell him none the less to Mr. Ransom!" Natalie gapped as she recalled what Mr.Ransom did to his racehorses to make sure they won whatever race they were in even if it put the horse's life in jeapordy including Blue Spirit who he use to own. My mom is looking for a horse, maybe she could help us," seeing how calm and gentle the stallion was as he playfully nuzzled at Kris's shoulder blades which made her laugh gently. " Has your dad gone mad?"
" Golden Mustang kicked my ankle when he spooked today, and my dad saw the entire thing although its only because he and Sean were screaming their heads off like foals in a play fight about who knows what! He's becoming very unmanagable because he hasn't been getting outside due to all of the rain therefore this is the first time he's gotten out in weeks! Also, with Diablo wandering around, he's become rather protective of me, Moonshine, Flame, and Blue Spirit since we make up his herd. Its putting unneeded stress on all of us since we're always on the look out for Diablo, and with Moonshine and Blue Spirit in heat, Golden Mustang is especially protective because he doesn't want Diablo getting them in foal.
" As I said before you started talking about the reasons for your dad's reason in selling him, my mom is looking for a horse since she hasn't owned one since Moon, and we all know that was 14-years-ago. I was hoping that finding a horse could be Horse Wise project," Natalie began with a louder voice then normal since she was ususally extremely shy only to be interrupted from her brave and bold statement by Katy.
" Helping Kris keep Golden Mustang is also a Horse Wise project, you know that!" Katy argued back while Kris just buried her face in her horse's windswept black locks, trying to keep from crying.
" What am I gonna do?" Kris asked her beautiful horse through animal telepathic as her lower lip quivered just for a moment, fighting tears that were threatening to spill over. " Raveneheart, what can we do?" holding back a sob therefore was forced to give up on holding back the clear liquid drops sliding down her red face.
" All that we can do right now is just hope and pray to the Guardians that your father will have a change of heart, but you'll have to talk to him in order to do that therefore I can'd do much. Ask him why he wants to sell me so badly although if he gives you a reason like Sean gave me alot of money, that's not a very good excuse. If the excuse was something like, we need to otherwise we'll lose everything, I could understand that. If he has to sell me, at least do it to someone who won't break my spirit or try to slaughter me."
" I understand, but you've done nothing wrong to have this happen to you nor are we in danger of losing everything because our stud fees are very high due to the success rates of their foals. We're perfectly fine in the money department, I think that my mom has something to do with it!" a soft and muffled sob managing to come out of her mouth, but the stallion gave her a quick hug as she wrapped her arms around his neck. " My dad thinks that you're vicious because of what happened earlier, but you're not!"
" Natalie, you and your mom are capable of sharing Heart, but you won't let her ride him because you want to feel like he is your horse and your horse alone," the older girl continued with her light brown hair blowing in the breeze. " Maybe you and your mom could both ride and take care of Heart until we save Golden Mustang, and then we'll dive full force into finding your mom the perfect horse.
" But we both know that Golden Mustang is my mom's perfect-," and what made her stop was Kris turning to look at her with tears running down her face along with a look of betrayal. " Oh, Kris...I wasn't saying your should sell Golden Mustang to my mom, but we all kow that he is my mom's other perfect match besides Moon. If there is nothing we can do to stop the sale, Golden Mustang's best interest for a owner would be my mom!"
Natalie looked up at the clouds running by while trying to escape Kris's eyes growing wide as tears began leaking from them once again, laughing slightly at the horse shaped cloud galloping through the sky. She felt the sensation of riding at the time, with the wind rushing through her hair as the sound of cantering hoofbeats filled the air and rang like music in her ears.
" I know, and what scares me the most is the odds of my dad changing his mind are slim, more slim then the odds of Golden Mustang ever befriending Diablo therefore you should go ahead and tell your mom you may have found a horse," and with that being said, a loud sob escaped her lips before Golden Mustang put his massive head on her shoulder as Katy and Natalie both put an arm around their friend's shoulders.
Kris Farewell wiped the sweat from her forehead, breathing in the fresh and clear summer air although she wasn’t focused on the intense heat, but rather the tall, buckskin standing in front of her.
